Ultimately it's a matter of opinion even as far as "quality" is concerned.
Honestly, I'll agree that many people own an iPhone simply to own an iPhone. And I understand that there are other phones out there that may have faster processors, better screens, smoother interfaces (though like I said this is all a matter of opinion) but I'm plenty happy with what the iPhone has to offer, and if I'm not then there's no reason for me to get it. Right now I have a Nokia which is fine but it's not a smartphone, so I use my iTouch a lot and I'm very comfortable with it and find a lot of what it has to offer really useful. So if I can get a phone that does everything my iTouch and cellphone do and then some then that's a pretty good deal for me.
