Your point is people quit when they don't get satisfied result from whatever they invest on, right?
It's natural, IMO. When you do something and you realize it's not giving impressive result, you'll stop doing it eventually. For Maple, fail cubing is one of many reasons they quit: getting hacked, bored, friends quit, etc. I quit because I discovered XNA game studio; Visual C# addon that helps you make a game with only basic programming knowledge.
