Anyhow, I used [noparse] which makes all the BB code (what all this is) in the noparse zone not have any effect, so that you can demonstrate how to write BB code.

there's a link at the bottom of the screen. See where the Posting Permissions box is? Click on "BB code" where it says BB code is On.
That's how I learned how to do it.
I had forgotten about noparse however, I was completely guessing that it was that and not something else.
