Lux is a support caster hybrid. Her ratios and skill set don't allow her to carry hard late game. She still has the potential to burst someone down, but the reliability of her combos is fairly iffy. Smart shielding affords an impressive amount of survivability to your team however. You have the right idea of keeping your distance though, because Lux doesn't exactly gain anything for being close range, other than to chase.
The optimal strat involved 2x Philo Stones, but that obviously no longer works. I'm not sure what else to tell you in terms of itemization.
