We've figured out what galaxy we're in, and the surrounding galaxies, galaxies that aren't surrounding us at all. Even if humanity developed in the midst of the collision, like he said, we could determine by the size and shape of our current galaxy what is going on. We would know that our galaxy was in the midst of a collision.
Make no mistake, I'm by no means underestimating what science can do. This is the kind of thought an average human would likely have. "OMG WE'RE COLLIDING WITH ANDROMEDA!!" would simply be very silly despite however dangerous it sounds intuitively.
The "capacity" I mentioned was a human's conceptualization ability, or, if you will, our lifespan. We would go on living our lives, die, rinse and repeat several thousand times over and this whole... hectic situation "out there" will just unfold itself like a boss all the while.
We won't have the slightest reason to care about it and it won't even know we're here. The two scales are almost in different worlds.
