The main problem i see with haggling in maple, is that too many people are way too impatient, or see the initial offer as far absolute, because so many people deal in absolutes.
I once traded someone, they showed me an item(i think it was a White Versal Materia) I offered 20mil or so, they canceled immediately. I found them, and retraded, and asked for their counter-offer. They counter offered 21mil.
5% Difference in price, and this person wouldnt even haggle.
Most of the time, im more worried that someone is just going to cancel immediately, because unlike in real life, its slightly harder to tell the key information about a person. If some well known level 150 NL trades you, you are more likely to give them a good deal then a level 12 mule you see, even if the same person is controlling the account. You have to take into account not just the items worth, but the person you are dealing with, whether they seem to actually know the value of the things they have, whether they seem desperate to get mesos, or on the buying end, get the item. Truth be told, one of the approaches that pisses me off the most is the overly detatched approach, which some merchants will use if they have limited competition on a particular item. You trade them, they offer, and when you try to counter offer, they cancel, and will make it seem like they can get whatever you are selling elsewhere, easier then from you.
Honestly, haggling is all about, as a book i described says it, the seller opens with a ridiculously high offer, then you counter with equally ridiculously low counter offer, and it goes back and forth till you meet in the middle
But how low should you offer? Offer too low and the person wont think you are taking them seriously, offer too high and you risk spending more then you wanted when they offer back.
Poker is a good idea to improve your skills, but only RL poker, played for whatever, so long as its played with people you dont know that well(playing against your best friend wont help you get better at reading people).
And for Yu-Gi-Oh? I used to play that game too, some people got angry with me and a few of my friends, because we always tried NOT ripping off noobs, and thus allowed them to realize what their cards were worth. Oh well, one of my other friends still made around $1k a month uptrading and reselling the cards. Which is ridiculous, imo.
