I was always rich. I NPC'd everything including higher level drops I'd pass by. Mesos were never hard to come by although the bigger money didn't come until gaching or selling services, which only became necessary due to the IL version of 4th job at the time draining tons of MP pots.
Anywho, even now you can make an easy fortune just by mining and selling. I found a dozen people in Mardia who'll buy ores and plates.
