It is a "feature" of the MX518. Its called angle snapping. There isn't any way to get rid of it, since its a part of the mouse and how it interprets your movement.

Notice how the Intellimouse's lines are more fluid and human. They make no attempt at correcting the user. The MX518 tries to force straight lines whenever it can.
Try making circles in MSPaint. It'll make the angle snapping more apparent.
