In my opinion, as long as the subjects give consent and if he knows the possible consequences the research is still in line. Likewise, if the subject gives consent but does not know the possible consequences the research is out of line.
In the nature of animals and babies, obviously thy can not give consent. In this case the guardian or owner of these subjects would have to make the decision.
Of course, this has many flaws, but there's not really any clearer line than this one.
