Firefly was cancelled, but it wasn't "unfinished". That is, there's no real cliffhanger or anything that doesn't get resolved, since there's not much of specific season-long story arc and most of the episodes can even be watched out of order. There's a movie (Serenity) that takes place after the end of the series, anyway. And a few comics have also been released since then, one of which tells the past of Book, if you absolutely need to know that.
