I've been doing my collecting in the dungeon in Ant Tunnel II. Zombie Mushrooms tend to drop more crystals than the Horny mushrooms, and I've been getting about 165 per day (six sessions a day, no 2x drop). 
Oh, and what I read on a certain other forum (though I only got through the first 5 or 6 pages) leads me to believe that to exploit this weakness in the game, you have to use, shall we say, a "third-party program" to change the map data on your computer. Some people don't consider that a "hack," because you're not running some extra program while playing the game, but you've messed with the game regardless.
