Lighting in Abyss is usually dark, while in other areas, it's like foggy white. If you look closely enough, you see what looks like snow falling on the ground too.
The game has several quests later on that have an in-game explanation (or at least an explanation that the NPCs of Carderock believe) for the existence of Abyss dungeons. This game has some rather interesting writing.

I see people in Velskud selling Level 23/24 gear enhanced to something like +9 or 10 (which would require a fair amount of crude onyx) for like 500-800 gold.
