People at my school that I just know and talk too every so often (maybe once a week) I would consider acquaintances. Anything above that is a friend really. If I hang out with you every so often, maybe once a week, talk to you just about everyday, can trust you, and feel comfortable helping with your problems or any worries you have, you're a friend. I only have two real best friends, and I talk to them almost everyday and can talk to them about everything and anything. They've been in my life for several years and I really see there being no problems between the three of us (We're all three best friends with each other).
I really don't like having too many friends, because I have major trust issues after having it pissed on more times than I wanted. So I usually just go about my life and know who my real friends are. A friend really can't irritate me, as I take everything really light-heartily, but if you break my trust or go behind my back on something then eh, no longer can consider you a friend.
