He looks...
only partly human.
His hands are human(oid), but he looks like he doesn't have legs, just shadowy tentacles.
Also, I don't think the Black Mage expected him to try and pop a cap in his ass.

Those aren't tentacles, that's the interior of his cloak. Although I could see why they might be misinterpreted as tentacles.
