I would most likely never go to Alaska, being in the wilderness with bears and not necessarily being able to protect myself or have easy access to medical treatment does not sound like fun. Hopefully he has a speedy recovery.
Alaska is actually beautiful. I lived there for 3 years, never heard of this. Sorry about your friend(s).
