Evils.

Why should I save someone? In essence, it really isn't my problem. Many would call that cold and even horrible, so I guess I'm just not a nice person; still, why is it that a person should be obligated to act on something that has absolutely nothing to do with them? On the very small offchance that in the future that person could have given me a good career path opening, well, I'm willing to accept that loss, because there is an equally small but viable chance that the person will go on to commit a crime later in life. Neutrality is not evil, it's just neutrality. Also, I disagree that more motivated voting would result in a better system, because our system is fundamentally broken at this point and needs to be totally redone. I'm not one of those people that thinks we are the worst country in the world, because I realize we are still probably one of the better ones system-wise, and to me it's scary as hell that a country this broken is still basically the most free. It's not a matter of "well, its the least bad", I see it as, "wow, the standard is so low we are near the top just based on the fact that everywhere else sucks even more".

I used to not care about people either. Then I grew up and realized how much caring about other people really does for me (Hint: A lot). You know, all bad sh`it about me aside for the moment, I'm a pretty good person to others. I do a lot for other people now despite knowing that I will most likely not get that kind of treatment in return. But I used to be 100% cold and calculating and then I guess I had some kind of change and saw things a little clearer and actually started to care about things other than myself. Let me tell you, it was a burden off, somehow.

Anyway I just kind of picked at one part of that to respond to. Moving on...I somewhat agree with your opinion about our country, though I doubt it's going to pick itself off the ground at this point. It's headed into some abyss and while it isn't some utter destruction like some would have you believe, I doubt the standard of living is going to stay the same for too much longer. Ironically enough it has little to do with our political system. They're not the (entire) problem and not even a large part of it, but they should be the fix and they're not going to be that, either.
