You're wrong.
Shielding Wards prevent your equip from booming, but do not prevent slot loss if the scroll fails. That's where Pam's Song comes in.
To use both: have Pam's in your inventory. Use Ward (drag and drop onto item to be scrolled). Use dark scroll. The Ward will get used up, regardless of whether the scroll succeeds or not. If the scroll failed, you will get a Pam's pop-up asking whether you want to restore the slot.
