Things always get better. There have been plenty of recession/depressions/market downturns not only in America, but everywhere in the world. Right now we're in a global recession. I think this is the 5th one? Usually they last around 16 months, while a recession focused on just america usually lasts around 8-10 months. We'll all be perfectly fine.
