This is starting to look like MS's version of ascension (or rebirth or whatever you'd like to call it).
Typical online game ascensions function like this:
The major differences I see here are that your ascended character is considered a separate entity from your original character, instead opting for a link system in which you can still play your old character, and your old character is improved by your ascended character. The ascended character is also capped at a much lower level (no 4th job is available). So, the focus is still on giving you something else to do and to keep you interested, but the ultimately, the main character is still your original instead of the ascended character.
I see the possibility of an ascended 4th job, though, in which case it becomes a true ascension.
Typical online game ascensions function like this:
- Your old character is lost and reset to level 1
- Some stat/ability is transferred to your new character
- Class change is allowed
- Your new character has advantages over their normal class counterparts of the same level
- Your new character has abilities that were previously unattainable
