You can't expect people to suddenly stop using cars or eating animals. It's not for nothing that we invented cars, we can't afford to lose so much time on transportation on our world right now (can't ship things by bike/canoe across the sea and expect people to be happy, you can't take 2h to get to work each day if you want to have any time left). In the case of animals, the concentrated source of proteins they have are much more efficient, if we all got our proteins from nuts there would be not enough nuts for everyone.
The guys at PETA/Greenpeace should stop being stupid extremists, you can't expect society to change all at once for things that they developped out of necessity. You need a middle ground (like public transport instead of urging everyone to walk/bike everywhere) or eating only animals that are raised for this purpose.
Exploiting abuses is something that has no reason to be other than taking advantage of the system at the expense of other players.
