Hmm... the scenario I'm seeing is different: Once it became apparent the login server was deathly ill, somebody told the intern to take the game down.
Intern put the website in "game offline" mode, and put the login server out of its misery.
Then people started discussing what was wrong and how to fix and where are the cupcakes, until at 2:28pm someone glanced at whatever monitor they got and went, "Oh shyt, the game servers are still up!" and hit the panic switch (aka power off).
