I don't know the actual reason, but I believe it's because def/hp/mp/acc/avoid is factored in differently now, since all my equips that lowered were big in those stats.
Since scrolls were changed to give significantly higher amounts of def/hp/mp/acc/avoid, it makes sense to me.
