There are still really good singers out there, both in popular music and other genres. The last person who wowed me with their voice was Adele, but I don't listen to radio so I miss out on a lot of current music. Then again, her act is basically a copy of soul singing...(the cynical part of me sees it as a continuation of the whitewashing of black music for popular consumption, but then I remember I still like Led Zeppelin.)
Try not to expect anything of superior quality from pop music/culture. They're making money off catering to the lowest common denominator, and it's working. Doesn't mean it can't also be entertaining at the same time.
