*laughs*
Incidentally, the film you're referring to is actually about the battle between Picollo Damaioh and Goku that happened when Goku was actually much younger. This is theoretically before Picollo Jr fought with Goku later on (although I could understand them combining these elements for the sake of conciseness), and it's obviously before Raditz comes to Earth to set in course the chain of events that ran right on through the Saiyan and Freeza sagas. Basically, they might call it Dragon Ball Z (which, if I recall, they are not), but it's really beginning during the time that is Dragon Ball in the anime (by the way, the distinction of "Z" only exists in the anime, not the original manga).
Either way, I'm gonna be optimistic. These things are the sort of thing I would want to see in live action of all anime (although, I must admit, FMA would be pretty interesting in live action). Changes they seem to be making aren't too terrible, and frankly, they seem to be right on par with the sort of changes film adaptions of American comics have seen. "Oh no, they made Piccolo wear some pumpernickelty black thing; that's not right!" Take a look at Wolverine in the X-men films-- notice the lack of the mask, the lack of the yellow, the lack of the animal-like stripes (they brought yellow stripes in later on I think, but come on, that's still not right). "Oh no, why is Goku going to school?" Maybe because even if it worked in the comic/cartoon, it makes no sense for a minor to not be in school at his age and he would be branded a derelict.
ps on the topic of FMA, they're going to be doing another anime pretty soon. The last one started off based faithfully on the manga, but strayed from it rather quickly. This new one is supposed to be faithful straight through. I think they said it was coming out spring of next year.
