. . . opening the envelope.

Derrick ignores what he believes to be Reginald's trickery and grabs the sealed envelope from the table. The paper is noticeably aged, sealed with wax and marked with a curious insignia. He takes a moment to feel the envelope and determines the contents aren't simply paper--harder, like a small object. Disregarding care, Derrick rips the envelope open, eager to inspect its contents.

A folded letter and a skeleton key, each marked with the same strange insignia.

First, he unfolds the letter and reads its short, simple message:

"Sometimes all it takes is finding the right door."

Derrick holds the skeleton key and admires its beautiful design. "Maybe it opens a door in this mansion somewhere... But why would he have it sealed?" His mind then jumps to the locked book in his backpack, but he quickly realizes the key is much too big for that lock. Two keys. No closer to any answers. He places the skeleton key into his pocket, along with the small key. The massive collection of books surrounding Derrick greatly intimidates him. Quite literally a mountain of books. He sits down in one of the chairs near the table and lets out a heavy sigh, taking in everything he's experienced. "It hardly seems real anymore."

Countless answers potentially lie before him, but he starts to wonder if he really does have the will to find them. "One step at a time, I guess," he says as he . . .
