. . . explore the doors on the ground floor.
Seeing an opportunity, Derrick rushes to the opposite wall and checks the first door. It's locked. He looks around the foyer and counts anywhere from five to seven doors on each floor. He walks to the next door, trying to keep from getting discouraged. Another locked door. "Dammit. What is this place." He tries the large door on the wall opposite the entry, and it opens. Each door is decorated with a unique, ornate knob. Derrick notices the curious design as he pushes the door open and thinks his host definitely can't be trusted.
He closes the door behind him and wonders if he could even hide from Reginald if he needed to. The feeling is unnerving, but he continues his exploration. Inside, he finds himself facing down a massive dining table. Despite having seats for twenty people, Derrick notices it appears to have fallen into disuse. Another door on each wall. He runs to the one opposite the direction Reginald entered, fearing the other may lead directly to the kitchen. Here he finds a short, empty hallway. At the end, an intimidating portrait of a regal man stares him down. Derrick finds it hard to look at the painting. To the left and right, the hallway continues with several new doors. He chooses the branch to the right and opens the first door, eager to put distance between Reginald and himself.
A stately bedroom, clearly having seen little use. "How the hell did this all get down here... He can't possibly live alone." Derrick rummages through the dresser drawers but doesn't find anything out of the ordinary. Several articles of neatly folded clothing, appearing brand-new. The large bed is perfectly made. He finds an adjoining bathroom, but it, too, has little of interest and appears completely unused. He leaves and enters the next door in the hallway. Another bedroom, nearly identical to the last one. Derrick quickly leaves and heads for the last door at the end.
Goosebumps wash over his body as he pulls the door open. More stairs, descending even deeper. A cool breeze rushes past his face, making him feel uneasy. From the foyer, Reginald's voice calls out faintly. Derrick shuts the door and rushes into the basement. He takes his flashlight out again to help him find a light switch. Its beam flickers, dimmer than before. "No...you can't give out on me yet." Luckily, he finds a switch and flips it on. The basement is dank and barren, shockingly different from the previous rooms. Derrick cautiously moves forward, realizing how it feels more like a dungeon than anything. Following the slight slope even deeper, he finds a foreboding door blocking his path--its small window lined with rusty bars.
The sound of footsteps above him. Reginald's voice, barely audible. Derrick knows he is searching for him. Feeling cornered, he begins to open the barred door...but stops when he hears something from within. Something living. He remains completely still, suddenly unsure which direction is more unsafe. The noise is muffled...broken, but it sounds sad. Like weak crying. Reginald's footsteps go silent. Derrick looks through the bars but finds it hard to see clearly. The room is dimly lit. A few slow drips stand out against the weak, hidden noise. Fearing another moment of remaining still, he decides to . . .
