The simplest way to cook a steak is in a pan. Heat up enough oil to make a 1/4 inch layer, until the oil is really hot, almost smoking. Throw your steak in there and sear it for a few minutes. Flip, then sear other side. The trick is to not bother the steak too much. Just let it do its thing.
After both sides have a nice sear on them, take the steak off the heat and let it sit for a few minutes. This is to let it finish cooking from the residual heat, and it also makes the steak juicier. Use a meat thermometer to make sure it's cooked to the right temperature, and that depends on how you like your steak.
