50% HP on the beefy champs doesn't translate into killable a lot of the time, unless you're an assassin or nuker that has done reasonably well. I don't know what reasons Yi had in mind for the situation, but my line of reasoning is that they lots of options, including Nunu's slowcity and Sona's ult. We can't reasonably kill the beefy dudes fast enough to upkeep our DPS (if it existed, we did pretty poorly) over theirs, and the matter of reaching Sona to kill her is pretty damn difficult, if not impossible.

You only resort to desperate measures if our structural assets were actually in trouble, or if a team objective being taken spells certain doom for us, or if you think you can really get the opportunity to ruin their team and consequently get some damage to their base. If and when to initiate is tricky business, but there really wasn't any urgency to "omg kill them all".
