I have a sense of shame. I'm not insecure -- I like the things I like, I just recognise that some of those things are complete garbage and as such, I should keep it to myself that I enjoy them. I also recognise that being embarrassed by those things is natural, because what society thinks absolutely matters. My ability to compartmentalize my life has allowed me countless opportunities, and has created a space for me as a respectable member of society. I also recognise that not everyone is going to accept that I like [x] thing, even if it's silly for them not to. That doesn't make them bad people, or unworthy of my friendship. We all have opinions. I don't subject my friends to things they don't care about, it's a mutual respect.
By no means does this mean I'm acting as someone I'm not. This is exactly who I am, and I'm proud of it. I've also been incredibly successful in most things, as well. So as far as I'm concerned, this is the right way to live. I've never seen someone who never stops talking about pomegranate no one cares about in the same position as me, and I'm pretty sure there's a good reason for that.
