Zelda's story isn't an obvious one when you're playing it. It's basically like Kingdom Hearts's where it's sort of disconnected here and there, pretty abstract, having to piece together each puzzle piece until you get a decent story, but you really won't even understand unless you paid attention to every detail since the late 80s/early 90s till this day.
You expect kids these days to know what the pineapple Kingdom Hearts's story is about? Hell no, most people don't even understand that pomegranate, and it's the same for Zelda. Over the years it's like, ''who the pineapple gives a pomegranate anymore about where the story is going?''. I mean, I love Zelda and all or I wouldn't have played it all these years, eating up all the games like it's shrimp, and I even have a Link skin on Minecraft, but I just don't think there's much real story experience when actually playing most of the games. A story is only really most apparent in Majora's Mask where you get to ''get personal'' with the NPCs in the game, learn about them, how they interact with each other, and how your actions affect them, etc. It even gets pretty emotional at certain points. The other Zelda's don't reach this kind of story... they just don't.
Even the story behind why the Skull Kid was the way he was is pretty sad.
Whether kids these days see it or not, they're there and Majora's Mask isn't the only one with an "apparent story." Wind Waker and Twilight Princess pretty much throw it all at you. I mean, if you're going to go around to the different NPCs in Majora's Mask and read all of their text, you're obviously going to read the story line presented to you in bold print and with cutscenes in Twilight Princess and Wind Waker. lol
Hell, Twilight Princess gives the biggest clues to the entire Zelda series, as far as I can remember. It covers the Occoco creation of the Hylians + Hyrule, it covers what happened after Link left Hyrule in OoT without having defeated Ganondorf, it tells of the great war with magic, it even tells us the history of the Twilight Realm. :|
