Essentially they have a "Record Keeper" in where it tells which items you've picked up in your game, so it at least gives you an incentive to "Collect 100% of items" if you wish to do so.
Also they give you a list of how many times you've defeated the super bosses, such as Baal, Prinny Baal, Item General/King/God, etc.

Also if you get the handheld versions, the DS version sucks ass. You're better off just sticking with the PSP versions.
