My entire family speaks Spanish and only a good 10% of my family can actually speak English. However, my mom told me that I was speaking English perfectly at the age of two, to the point where I could fool people into thinking I was American. This was most likely due to my mom being a single parent and always either having to leave me at home or at a daycare where most of what was spoken was English (TV, teachers). I never really learned Spanish until I was 5 because I was visiting family and they would never understand a thing I said. That said, despite my heavy Spanish background, English has always been my first language and my Spanish has now grown to be mediocre at best.
Like my Spanish, I also understand Dutch a lot better than I speak it. I was raised on a Dutch school system up until college, but I'm not all that good at speaking it, in fact I lost most of what I learned in school due to me not constantly touching up on it after I left home for college. However, if it were to be spoken to me, I can guarantee I know what's being said. I also noticed that because I had learned how to speak and understand Dutch, I could pick up a lot of things in German because of how similar the two languages are. Dutch has strange grammar rules but it's really an interesting language to me.
