It does not matter who you're playing, you have to have at least one defensive item. Banshee's, Wriggle's, and Mercury's Treads cover defensive needs for most AD carries without weighing down their offensive abilities.
I used QSS today. It actually hardcounters Malzahar. Bait the ult, QSS, go do tank things. Possibly one of my new favourite items. Purp was there (carried both games, once as Kog and once as Panth) and can attest to how amazed I was with QSS. I waddled over to their blue to take it and four of them came for me, Malz ulted, I QSS'd and went over to the rest of my team to get the straggler that didn't come to gank me.
