Long wall of text from an ex-mapler.. or rather.. ex-MSEA-er.
I recently just downloaded back MSEA to try out Big Bang.. Since I happen to see this thread.. well..
I'll talk about Shanghai first, since I used to visit there frequently to train... in year 2007.
In my opinion, I don't feel any difference now even if they removed Shanghai.
Back then, Shanghai shines, because Steelys are actually still very expensive back then. Due to centipede dropping steely as a loot, the prices continue to drop.
And with limited variety of maps to train last time, Shanghai is actually well-received by MSEA-ers back then.
The only map in Shanghai that I remembered of it being popular is this..

^ This fake centipede boss has been around for years and until now.. It's still there. lol.
Back then, this map is very popular for training. It's even crowded during school holidays.
Apart from Steelys from Centipede boss, the ducks drop Mystic Shield, which is worthy back then.
However, with the rise of new and better training areas/places to get EXP (eg. Mushroom Castle, Monster Carnival), this map, along with the other maps.. has become deserted.
The rest of the maps for training? I guess not. The map layouts are too big and most of the maps have mixture of monsters..
So basically Shanghai's quite outdated from the current Maple World in terms of updates, EXP and Quests.
Maybe they tried to get more people to train in those world tour areas. One example would be having 'Wedding Photos' Quest in Boat Quay (GMS doesn't have it because they don't have Shanghai) which requires you to talk to the photographer in Shanghai. And the EXP is great for low levels during pre-BB. It was 15k EXP if I'm not wrong. You just have to pay 20k mesos to the photographer for free EXP.

(If you looked carefully, I completed this quest at 2007.)
Nonetheless, I watched a video on the newly revamped Shanghai.

I find them improved. Both graphics and layouts. Well.. in 2008 that is.
In my opinion, the maps still aren't great for training.
The problem with Shanghai is that the maps are still big for training, and mixed spawns of monsters are all around the maps.
Well.. Steelys aren't that great now. Mystic Shields too. I guess it's time to remove them... =\
I do hope they do not remove and improve on it. But I guess that's the end, or someday, when Nexon decides to improvise on all World Tour areas.. We'll see.
I will talk about Thailand in the next post.
