I can do some runs with you if you'd like, I got lucky and found the top, the bottom, and the sword while levelling up randomly. Also got a drill randomly, though I didn't need it at the point I got it. I would just keep trying to upgrade to +5 or +6... items can't break or go straight to +0 until you try to upgrade at +6 or higher. So there's no real harm in doing it until that point.
