Real bonds are forged through real experiences, getting to know someone personally in some way. I don't believe for a second that any of these pony fans are actually as passionate about ponies as they try to come across. I'd go so far as to say it's all a bit of an act.

Fair enough. I will say that it's certainly nice that the show does provide some common ground for people to form bonds over, much like pretty much anything else. It's sad it seems to have grown into more of a cult instead of something... better I guess? Not really sure what though.
