The Wii never had anything amazing. Do people even actually look at the Wii's library? Granted, the technology used for the Wiimote and how it was incorporated into a fun fitness daily morning routine helps people out there that wants to have fun while getting into shape, but I never saw anything spectacular on the Wii. The only thing Nintendo has that's relatively interesting (to me) nowadays are the Pokemon franchise. That and maybe Zelda games that are still coming out or being re-made to have better quality.
Some of the more recent games that appeals to audiences nowadays are mostly FPS and games similar to Monster Hunter, as Rob mentioned in his post. The first couple MH games weren't even on Nintendo consoles. Nintendo doesn't really have anything interesting. Well, ok, if you consider 'imports', then my statement is invalidated and doesn't mean squat (when it comes to their portables).
PS: Even if Nintendo does go first, and be the 1st company to release their new console, it doesn't mean jack. Sony or Microsoft can easily learn from Nintendo's mistake and make their console even better.
