I don't see why people think that Nintendo doesn't need it, or that the Wii still seems new. The Wii's about 5 years old and that's the standard lifecycle for a Nintendo home console. Plus Nintendo has to play catchup in terms of the power their home consoles can dish out. I mean now that their major competitors have gotten into motion control (Kinect did alright, though Move didn't really shine all that much) Nintendo would have to step up their game and bring something new to the table. And industry analysts (if you care for their opinion) have been saying that Nintendo's been too SLOW in bringing in a new console.
Anyways, according to Miyamoto, a new console is definitely in the works. The details regarding it, though, should be considered speculation.

I also wouldn't put too much faith in the pictures. Though putting a screen onto a controller seems like one of the crazy ideas Nintendo can come up with.
