Your tournament didn't regulate the damage level or time? I would have just paused and went back to character select until he got it right.
The tournament at my school was really awkward. It was run by the people who normally do Smash tournaments, which they apparently have "moderators" for to watch matches and report the outcomes, which I've never had happen before. Most of the moderators were just annoying. Got scrubbed out by a friend in Blazblue so I think I finished like top 6 or something, got 3rd in SSFIV, only being beat by two of my friends (there was almost no one else there who could play the game at all competently), and I have no idea where I placed in Marvel, but I think I got like 4 wins in a game I don't play.
It just sucked that afterwards, we all went to where we normally play games Friday night on campus (which is in a class building) and all the rooms were filled. Also, no one from off campus who didn't go to the tournament showed up, so our weekly gathering was kind of small. A friend and I just started playing shmups on his laptop instead of playing fighting games since the only two setups we had had Marvel and SSFIV on them. We also didn't have many viewers for our weekly stream, so we shut it off really early.
