Apparently they tried to fix it by just changing the items' equip conditions, and hoped it would cause them to become unequipped automagically. Of course they never tested it...
Having to actually go over the database and find all the equipped-item inventories with two or more Type II rings and somehow take care of them will take some hours. I wouldn't be too surprised if whatever method they choose to deal with those rings will result in glitches.
