The new ones actually maintain there to be an actual story within the show. The episode from the OP references SEVERAL points made in previous episodes that you would not know if not caught up.
1) Quagmire hates brian.
2) Sheryl is for quagmire "the one who got away"
3) Gillian
4) Other plot twists that i forgot about since watching the episode.
So yeah.
