In middle school, they teach you to work the ()'s before you move to the rest. In doing that, you add the 9 to 3 then you multiply it to the two, therefore removing the ()'s and leaving you with just 48/2.
Since the challenge was "Let's see if you passed middle school" and not "Let's see how far in math you have gotten", 2 is the correct answer.
