On a serious note, Ray pretty much covered what a good Shen should do. Just have eyes on your teammates when your ult is available. But do note that sometimes you'll get as'sholes who will pretty much curse at you for not "saving them" at the right time. Just ignore them. There's no time to deal with selfish buttheads.
If you want to see a good Shen, play with him sometime. I had the opportunity to see him get fed very nicely today.
