Having played alot of melee classes, and a few mage classes, I'd have to say BaM is the best of both worlds. The early levels feel like brawler (i got a transparent wand and some nice looking gloves) up until 4th job when your attack clearly becomes a swing. However, BaMs have more range than any melee ive played, faster attack speed, and more HP (17k at lvl 165 rivals DrK). If you plan on training in LHC I wouldnt recommend making any mage besides BaM or Evan (although evans annoy the hell out of me at LHC). If you dont plan on reaching 4th job then I'd say make a brawler, as they really are loads of fun. I quickly got bored with my bucc at 14x though :/
