If we're going to base ourselves in historical facts, then there's one that clearly suits this discussion. In the Middle Ages, where commonly, people spent a lot of time without using any of the things mentioned, wedding was a torture. The bride, couldn't take a bath until late May, and would only after the marriage is done. It was just a terrible smell, on a sorta cold country, that Europe was by that time, the body had no change and did continue to produce the oils and the smell. Ever wondered why the wedding bouquet always have strong scent flowers? Like all kinds of roses?
It was not only because these used to represent aristocracy, and were something beautiful, but also because of the fact the body odor from the bride was just terrible from spending all these months without a single water drop going by her body, that it was strictly necessary to put another fresh scent to get mixed up with the horrible smell, and make something still bad, but not enough to destroy your nose.
The sensation was like marrying a corpse bride already in decomposition.
Also, the most wrong thing people do nowadays, is to think that spreading perfumes over the body does the same as taking a shower. It doesn't. Like the case i've mentioned, you can't just stop taking showers and use perfumes as a solution. If you mix up a strong smell with a bad smell, it won't turn any good. It's sorta common to see a few people doing it, and it doesn't work, seriously.
you still shower. It is a key difference that i can't believe people still aren't noting. You just don't use soap.
