So long as you can learn to play better and have sufficiently researched your class, you're not bad. 
Item ranks like Ordinary/Superior aren't too important. It only means minor stat changes, like how in Maple grey items are slightly worse than white or blue text items. You'd want to shoot for Superior/Exceptional equipment, overall.
As for text colors: White is junk; sell for money. Blue is junk; go to Loton and disassemble for cubes. Purple is good. Use the sub-class appropriate weapon of purple quality, and sell on the Auction House purple equipment that you don't need (unless it's worth less than 10k in which you should disassemble at Loton). Pink is very rare. Sell on Auction House for big money, but on very rare cases should you equip one. Gold is Unique; you get those from Hell Mode. Orange is Chronicle equipment; you don't have to worry about them until level 5x. Red-Orange (I think) is Terranite equipment; that you also don't worry until level 5x.
