As for equal rights, I simply believe that people should have equal rights and oppertunities regardless of race, religion, gender, etc. and that no laws should favor one race or gender (among other things) over another. For example, if women want equal rights, then they should also have to sign up for the selective service, just like how men are required by law (although I'd much rather prefer removing the selective service). Then things like Affirmative action should not exist as it does favour some people over others for factors that people have absolutely no control over.
While that would be an ideal society, it's not possible. Most opportunities given to people in this country are privately offered, such as businesses giving grants for research or scholarships for universities. It's never really going to happen as long as any business can be privately owned and not run by the government and well... since our country was originally designed to have limited government control over the people, it's not going to happen.
