About the arguments of "you can just sit down at a library and learn", either you have very badly taught courses, very crowded rooms or too few hours of classes for a subject. A good teacher will take you very far on a subject much faster and better than you can learn just by reading a book. There is a reason pedagogy exists.
I don't really know how it is on the US though, in my university in Brazil it's possible to have both good and bad teachers (with a better or worse ratio depending which course you are taking), but I have been generally happy with the teachers I got.
