kunagisa and seanny have it right, you can't deal with everyone in the same way, i had just one person i could really call a bully annoy me, and as much as i tried reasonin with the guy, i don't even know what was his problem, he would just try to hit me/walk away/not give a damn, he threw soda cans at me and crap, i didn't care.
until one day he just grabbed me from behind and "threw me" against a metal trash can, that's when i snapped, followed the kid around school, and i was the second fastest dastard up to 2 grades above me, so i followed him, grabbed him, threw him to the ground, and told him that if he ever tried to do anything to me again, i would kick his crap.
i swear, i never saw the guy again, to this day i dunno wtp happened to him
what i am getting at is, some understand reason, some see you are serious, heck, some might even change their ways, but there is always a bully you just have to scare the crap of/kick his ass.
i still got anoyed by other people, but that was the only one to actually hit me more than once, so i just let every other guy be and not give a damn (that, and grew too skinny to even throw a good punch, but if i had to, i would.)

forgot to say, i think the big guy overdid it, i don't think he shouldn't have fought back, but maybe a bit less...dangerously.
you can see he is a very patient fella, one hit on the kid, nothing on the friend, and he just walked away, even though his face clearly said "i'd also do it to you"
guy knows when enough is enough
