And to be honest, I think the government might be trying to tone down any panic that might be caused from a meltdown (governments like our's do this all the time, like how the EPA lied about the toxicity of New York's air after 9/11). That and, regardless the radiation from the explosions cant be a good thing, especially if fallout is blown into the upper atmosphere. Although, for people in the US, the most I'd suggest is obtaining potassium iodide or iodate. No reason to panic. Just basic precautions.
